Review of Rollerball (2002) by Kevin D — 26 Apr 2012
I feel like a more exploitive approach would have improved things. The game of rollerball itself is a lot of fun; who can say no to vicious futuristic bloodsport? Not I! I felt that the whole thing was uninvolving on a dramatic level, and the dystopic setting was clumsily established, with goofy touches like the yuppies who squeal with delight while blasting down trees with a laser gun.
Only the sports cliches really resonate, and that's the closest the movie gets to an actual bite, getting us to root for Caan as he literal slaughters his opponents.
