Review of Roll Bounce (2005) by Manly D — 25 Apr 2008
Roll Bounce follows the life of Xavier, X to his friends, played by Bow Wow, and his group of roller skating friends in the late 70s disco era. The movie picks up a year after X's mother dies, and he and his father are still coming to terms with the loss. There's a lot of tension and bonding between them throughout the movie, which ends in reconciliation.
X and his group of friends are the big dog skating group at their local skating rink, the Garden, but it gets shut down for monetary reasons and they have to go uptown to skate at Sweetwater Skating Rink, where there's a whole nother league of skaters, headed by the Sweetwater Rollers. This movie boils down to a similar concept of "You Got Served!" with roller disco instead of breakdancing. Throughout the movie X and his friends grow as individuals and a team to rise up and meet the challenge of the Sweetwater Rollers in the Rollerskating Championship held every year at Sweetwater.
This is a basic coming-of-age type story set in the late 70s. The theme, the music, and the look are all quite authentic to the era and fun in general. Now, I have a soft spot for disco and father/son bonding moments, so I may have enjoyed this movie more than others.
