Review of Role Models (2008) by Jeff S — 03 Dec 2011
I can never tell when a comedy is going to be smart-funny, entertaining-funny, stupid-funny, or crude-funny. I thought this might be a crude-funny bordering on stupid-funny that slips into kind of sad with a message type of movie. I was wrong - I was totally entertained.
Role Models tell the story of two friends, Wheeler and Danny, who have a bad day at work and end up getting sentenced to community service. They are assigned to be big brothers to two kids who have been rejected by their other big brothers many times before. In other words, this situation is hopeless, as the two men have no interest in nurturing a relationship with these two boys. I can understand their apathy in a way: these boys are hard to understand and rebel against the men. Augie is into a live-action World of Warcraft and Ronnie is constantly making scenes in public against wheeler. These two situations lend themselves to moments of hilarity.
What was most surprising is that all of the characters are likable by themselves, but when you put them together, the viewer can't help but to hope everything works for them in the end. Do the big brothers make mistakes? Sure, but they are men enough to work them out by the end. A great surprise movie that I thoroughly enjoyed.
