Review of Rogue (2007) by Nic L — 06 Sep 2008
Forget "Lake Placid", "Deep Blue Sea" and the endless stream of bloody direct to video creature features that have come out recently. If you enjoyed or even didn't enjoy "Wolf Creek", the director has made one of the most brutal and realistic horror survival films I've ever had the pleasure of watching.
"Rogue" follows an American journalist on a crocodile tour through a stunning gorge in Northern Territory, Australia. Miles and miles upriver, the tourboat takes a detour when a distress flare goes off in the distance, and in the deep swamp the group is attacked by a massive crocodile.
Not only are the special effects the best I've ever seen, but the crocodile acts very naturally and the tension is phenomenal. It's not simply a run of the mill "one by one" slasher, these are fleshed out characters in a frightening situation.
Granted it gets a bit over the top and predictable towards the conclusion, the movie never loses its edge or sense of fear. Check this movie out. By the way, it really makes me angry that this had barely any marketing or release in America because "Primeval" sucked last year at the box office, but trust me, this is a white knuckle thrill ride that sinks its teeth in and won't let go.
