Review of Rocky V (1990) by I Don't Know W — 10 Jun 2011
What do people hate about this movie? The story's cool, the acting is good, and the characters, like all Rocky movies, are very likable. The only main problem I saw that people had with this movie was that the street fight at the end was pointless, and to that, I say; "Sure, it was unnecessary, but it sure was satisfying, which makes the movie even better".
I think my favorite part of this movie is the chemistry between Rocky and Rocky Jr. They actually act like father and son really good. They have arguments, but they also have several special moments. The story is Rocky and his family have everything, well, everything until Paulie accidentally gives it away.
Now, the family goes back to where they originally started. It's a great concept and executed just as well. Next, let's talk about the villain, Tommy Gunn, cause besides Apollo Creed, I think he's the best Rocky villain.
Like Apollo, he's realistic, and at the beginning, he's nice, but when he wants a title match, he starts to become a jerk. Why couldn't they do that with Clubber Lang or Ivan Drago in past Rocky movies? It'd certainly make them more than just generic jerks.
Now, let's get to the flaws of this movie. Firstly, the movie is pretty cheesy, not as cheesy as Rocky 4, but it's still cheesy enough to get annoying. Secondly, the street fight between Rocky and Tommy was pretty intense, but if Rocky couldn't fight because of brain damage, how'd he fight Tommy Gunn *SPOILER* AND win, and yet we never get told if Rocky's brain damage got any worse.
Thirdly, since the director of the first Rocky directed this, I was kinda hoping for some psychological torture to be shown from some of the characters, but no. Sure, we have the street fight scene where Rocky has some weird visions after falling down, but that's about it.
Overall; This movie has flaws,, but it's still underrated greatness.
