What sets the original apart from the rest of the series (with the exception of Rocky Balboa and Creed) is the emotion and depth. You feel for Rocky because he's supposed to represent the average person facing the world.
He's supposed to be us. He's fighting not for his ego, but for himself to live. He's been fighting all his life. Rocky is a beautiful piece of cinema and one of the best and most historic movies ever made.
