Review of RocknRolla (2008) by Archibald T — 24 Mar 2011
So What's a RocknRolla? It's somebody who wants the whole fucking lot.
Johnny Quid is a RocknRolla...and a junkie crackhead who is also a rock star. His stepfather is Lenny Cole, a big time crime boss who happens to be an informant. I smell The Departed on this tid-bit. Lenny meets with a Russian who needs help from Lenny, he agrees to help. The Russian hands over some cash and a lucky painting which happens to be the whole point of the film.
When the lucky painting is stolen, Lenny flips out and wants to know where it is before the Russian goes ape shit and offs him. Not only that, but the Russian has lost out on, I think it was, seven million dollars in a deal gone stolen by a group called the wild bunch: Mumbles, One Two and Bob the fairy.
Stella is an accountant who works for the Russian and the Russian wants her, badly. If only he had his lucky painting. Oh well. Stella is more interested in One Two played by Gerard Butler. She's a sexy little thing who unfortunately upsets the Russian leading his associate to take care of her.
Much of the film revolves around two things: That damn painting and Johnny Quid.
Aside from the constant homophobia scorching off the screen, this was a good movie. Visually well made, but a rinse and repeat of the same shit from other films from Guy Ritchie. That is all.
