[SPOILERS.] When else would we laugh at a kid as pathetic as Hal? First off, he's got a speech impediment, no friends, a shitty home life and his father walked out on them. His speech therapist doesn't even know what he's doing.

Then this rich, smart girl comes along and uses him, breaks his heart, and drives him to alcoholism and vandalism (okay, I'm pushing it with the alcoholism). This kid is what? 14 years old or something? This is shit we probably laugh at in real life but feel bad about afterwards.

At least after this movie, we don't feel bad because, somehow, we think Hal has triumphed even though he totally hasn't.
