Review of Rock of Ages (2012) by Jason C — 03 Mar 2013
The '80's were my generation, so I had high expectations for this movie. The soundtrack was great and brought back lots of fun memories. Unfortunately, the story deviates too much from the Broadway show it was based on (which kicked ass).
The Broadway version was full of laughs and was done in a way that the audience very much felt they were part of the show and in on the joke. Sadly, once Hollywood got its hands on this they changed everything that was good about it.
It seems someone figured this should be a movie about Tom Cruise's character Stacee Jaxx, who was more of a supporting character in the original story. By making Jaxx the main focus of the film, the story is negatively affected.
Further, the parts of Denis (Alec Baldwin) and Lony (Russell Brand) are sorely miscast. Someone like Will Ferrel as Denis and Jack Black as Lony would have been much better in my mind. Regardless of its faults, it's not horrible.
If you want to waste two hours go ahead and watch it. There are certainly worse ways to waste time than by watching the very sexy Julianne Hough shaking her butt across the big screen to some hair metal classics.
