Review of Rocco and His Brothers (1960) by James C — 12 Jun 2008
The ultimate parable of modern life, as a family of country bumpkins (mother and 5 sons) come to the big city and lose their sense of who they were. Each of them is sucked into a new identity, which is one of the types of identity available to a working class man in the contemporary urban world (winner, loser, struggling father, conformist skilled worker).
Along the way, a woman is sacrificed. An all time masterpiece, and perhaps Visconti's best.
