Review of Robot Monster (1953) by Kestutis K — 18 Jul 2010
In the land of bad movies, Robot Monster has a rightfully earned place near the top, er, bottom. The premise is a somewhat ambitious attempt to tell a post-apocalyptic story of an alien robot who has destroyed all but eight human beings on the planet and is now trying to finish the job.
Unfortunately, the non-existent budget means that the fearsome agent of mankind's doom is a guy in a gorilla costume and a diving helmet who used a bubble machine and stock footage of lizards fighting to almost destroy humanity. The acting is of course, also bad, but they deliver their lines with such seriousness that it only adds to the hilarious absurdity of the whole thing.
About the only good bright spot is the score by legendary composer Elmer Bernstein.
Insane, inane but with a touch of sincerity, Robot Monster is required viewing for fans of bad movies.
