Review of Robot Monster (1953) by Alan B — 05 May 2012
Robot Monster (1953) is one of director, Phil Tucker's few cinematic efforts and famously one of history's worst movies, but Robot Monster does offer its own brand of entertainment. If you enjoy senseless dialogue, corny acting and ridiculous monster costumes then this will be 62 minutes well spent.
The monster (Ro-Man) and his master do enjoy a lot of screen time though out the film, unlike so many movie aliens and beasties of this era. Creatures from the likes of 'It Conquered the World' and 'The Alligator People' only feature in the final minutes of their films.
Okay, here's the plot. The planet Earth has been attacked by the invincible Ro-Man, leaving just 6 survivors: Roy (the hairy chested George Nader), Alice (Science Fiction Theatre's Claudia Barett), the proffer (John Mylong, who I can't believe as other acting credits), Alice's mother and annoying children, Jonny and Carla are all what is left. The hormonal Ro-Man's orders are to eliminate these remaining humans who are protected by the professor's electrical field.
Don't laugh too hard at Ro-Man's costume (even if you can see actor, George Barrow's face through his headgear) the strange gorilla suit/diving helmet combination is kind of explained in the final act.
