Review of RoboCop (2014) by Hugo P — 27 Jul 2014
I have never seen the original RoboCop. This review is coming from someone who isn't nostalgic for the movie. Which, from other reviews, I thought would make me like it a little more. But it didn't, I really did not like this movie.
My biggest complaint is the writing, the writing is bad. The dialogue is laughable in a lot of moments. The movie tries to be smart; it tries to say something about our society. It tries to talk about the wars that were going on, and are still currently happening.
But, the movie fails to execute any of the ideas it had. These are some great ideas, and would have made a better movie, if there were better writers involved. The directing is fine; I think José Padilha did an okay job directing the action sequences.
The acting is fine; Joel Kinnaman does what he can with the material. Michael Keaton has a fun time playing in this role. It's fun watching him play this part, but he thinks the dialogue is dumb as well and he does not try to make it serious or dramatic.
Michael Keaton was the best part of the entire movie, to be honest. Let's talk more about the writing, it's bad. It tries to make you care about the family, what they are going through, and fighting about whether or not turning Alex Murphy into a robot was a good idea.
I didn't care about the family; to me they were just blank faces citing pieces of dialogue to move the plot further. This movie thinks the audience is dumb, and they are smarter than the audience and needs to explain what is going on.
They do this by showing Samuel L. Jackson talk about the events. This just adds unnecessary time to movie, which feels longer than what it really is. I wanted the movie to end quicker; by the end I was bored.
The movie was mildly entertaining me the whole time, but when it was about to wrap up, it just would not go any faster. If you're asking why I have not mentioned Gary Oldman in the review, it's because he is underutilized.
They could have gotten anyone to play his part. But, I was entertained by the movie. I was intrigued by the story sometimes. Mild spoiler here, when Alex Murphy is solving his own "murder" that was really entertaining, spoilers over.
I was entertained, the action was okay. I would not say that you would have to see this right away, but if you do see it, you won't regret it.
