Review of RoboCop 2 (1990) by James S — 10 Mar 2008
The words 'bitterly dissapointing' don't even begin to cover the feelings you get from Robocop 2. It's an utter mess of a movie, half of which is drivel and Robo is almost relegated to a secondary character against the OCP goons and their search for the next future of law enforcement.
Theres no real plot to speak of and it's confusing from the off. An interesting angle in which Robo hangs outside the house of his former wife is dusted off and dispatched with quickly to make way for some bollocks about Robo becoming a bit of a softie while a drug lord gets the cyborg treatment amid a bunch of cartoon character villains.
It's even more dismaying as this was written by the fine talent of Frank Miller and directed by Irvin Kershner which probably means there was hefty dose of studio involvment.
Gone is the visceral edge of the original movie, replaced with the toned down, almost Saturday morning cartoon Robo that the character was to become.
It's diverting enough to keep the interest up but this is a major fall from grace.
