Review of RoboCop 2 (1990) by Sebastian K — 30 Jul 2011
Nowhere near as good as the first (Robocop looks more like plastic than metal) this sequel, when looked at individually, still entertains. Gone is the brutal gore, violence and many of the things that made the original Robocop sooooo good. Instead, we get a war on drugs message filmed with a PC attitude. Sure people still get shot and you see the blood spats off their chests and backs but it's clearly not what audiences were expecting.
It's nice that much of the cast of the original film (well those that weren't killed off) reprised their roles. Had there also been a change of cast, Robocop 2 probably would have died a horrible death and the franchise would have parished right then and there.
What I found most entertaining about the film was the attempts to create more Robocop units. Not only were the subsequent attempts the most gore filled aspects of the film but they were also the coolest.
I find it hard to believe that Frank Miller wrote this as I tend to enjoy a good deal of his work in comic form. I'll give him credit. He did write in a nice robot fight which Kershner decided to make into a nice long climax of an affair.
Hopefully Robocop 3 will be better. It is right? Right??
