Review of RoboCop (1987) by Peter N — 08 Aug 2012
Paul Verhoeven's first Hollywood blockbuster will forever remain his greatest. RoboCop is an exciting look at a dismal near-future full of petty crime, corporate corruption, and a half human-half machine police officer who likes to waste fools with a cool looking gun.
What sets RoboCop apart from the numerous other ultra-violent 80's action flicks is the fact that the whole thing feels like one big satire, providing commentary on numerous aspects of modern living.
By not taking itself too seriously, this film manages to be clever. The action sequences are among the best of its time and apart from the unavoidable humor stemming from 1987's depiction of the future, it remains a film that can be taken seriously (despite the fact that the bad guy is also the dad on That 70's Show).
