Review of RoboCop (1987) by Andy S — 14 Oct 2018
I love how they start with the portrayal of media and how they're always pushing topics that involve violence or death. That's the news for you. Of course the big robot malfunctions. Jeez, can you add more gore? Hah. Everyone was so nonchalant about that guy dying. It's almost as if people are so numb to death and violence since media is always pushing it.
Holy shit it's Red! From that 70's show! IT kind of seems like this movie doesn't take itself too seriously. Kind of reminds me of Total Recall. Red is magnificent at playing the evil guy. That's pretty insane. Already the main character is out of the picture. Or so you think... It's almost kind of funny and ridiculous how many shots he took and the blow to the brain and they still put him on a stretcher to the hospital thinking they can still revive him.
This movie has some surprisingly great use of the camera and of ideas. The handheld wide aliens used during the surgery. The HUD system. It's both sad and sweet to see that a part of who he was before is still with him even as a robot, when he twirled the gun before putting it in the holster.
This movie perfectly defines what it's like to watch the news here in America. This movie is like a social statement on all the violence that gets glorified by the news. This movie is essentially one big satire that just happens to have an original story with an interesting plot. This movie also tackles another interesting topic which is old brains versus young brains. Jones versus Morton. I've also seen this in the movie, Crimson Tide, where Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman go against each other. In the end, old minds need to learn when to step down and let the fresh young better brains do what's right. It's kind of sad seeing what a great life he had before his death and how even asa robot, he's trying to retrace his steps and discover his identity.
Of course Jones would resort to violence himself to solve his problems. Probably has a shrimp dick too. Television plays a big part in this movie. It's a statement to how glued we are to the television and our dumb sitcoms. Thank god Netflix and streaming services are changing the game. Those were some really good special effects the way they have Murphy's face there but the rest of his head is biotic. Those enormous sniper looking cannons look ridiculous. Almost like their making fun of big guns.
In the end, justice was served and evil was brought to end. As it always should be evil never wins. The world needs a Robocop right now.
