When I think of ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS the title, it conjours thoughts of JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER or SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS. It just simply cannot be a good movie I would think.

The fact of the matter is, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS is one of the best sci-fi movies of the 1960s. One of the main reasons for this is the attention to detail the director uses. For example, they make a good attempt at showing weightlessness in the space ship.

Also, a lot of movies that take place on Mars at least at the time, portrayed it as having enough oxygen to sustain human life. Our hero on this movie soon finds out after he lands on Mars that he can't just take off his helmet and start breathing.

He has to figure out a means to maintain enough oxygen to survive. It's a really fun, good movie that should have been DVD long ago. I'm glad Criterion released it. It's very much deservant of being released on the Criterion Collection.
