Review of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) by Heather E — 16 May 2010
Good ol' Kevin Costner. He's got a few good movies, sprinkled with his duds. For every JFK, there's a Postman. For every Field of Dreams, there's a Waterworld. Fortunately, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is a good movie, primarily because of the efforts of Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman really back up Costner's ho-hum performance as Robin of Loxsley.
Robin Hood, a big fan of Star Wars, decides to build a replica Ewok village in Sherwood Forest, and he was smart in doing so. The Ewoks won, which was his plan all along!! As you know, war comes to Robin and his band of outlaws, and its up to him to save the girl, defeat Nottingham, and survive long enough to see a Scot (Sean Connery) play the English King Richard the Lionheart, and naturally marry his daughter.
Prince of Thieves is traditional filming at its finest. You get your quota action fight scenes, the damsel in distress, the daring rescue, and the happy ending. Although not as polished or good as The Princess Bride, I still loved this movie. And when you have Morgan Freeman throwing his scimitar across the room to kill a crazy old witch, all in seamless bad-ass style, it just makes the final product all the more worth the price of admission. A great action-adventure movie, and with Rickman's performance as Nottingham, its definitely worth checking out on DVD!
