Review of Robin Hood (2018) by Rose I — 30 Nov 2018
Umm, it's so hard to put down a movie that obviously had so much effort and money put into it. I kept thinking of A Knight's Tale and how they meshed period with contemporary and it totally worked, but the Robin Hood, ew.
Ok, Egerton and Foxx are hot, had amazing stunts, cool arrow shots and those guys got the best costumes, but my gosh, the rest of the movie tried way to hard to be updated and current and bridge medieval with modern.
What a miss and completely awkward. One of the first scenes was straight out of American Sniper. So weird looking and I wondered if I was in the wrong movie. Nope, it set the tone of what a dichotomy this movie would be.
What bothered me the most? The costumes. I loved what Foxx and Egerton wore. I would take one of their coats any day. BUT! The Sheriff wore a clean, smooth, gray leather coat off the rack at Macy's on Black Friday.
Maid Marion had millennial hair and thrift store cast-offs and Robin Hood and John wore long underwear thermals from Wal-Mart. Seriously! The storyline was meh and I found myself not caring and tuning out.
Then there are the sets. Grrr, also obviously modern day and filmed in a mall, complete with shiny, polished, spotlessly clean floors. (Hmm, much like a Hong Kong shopping center, oh right, where it was filmed.
) It just didn't sync well and bugged me the whole time. And then it was blah blah blah, fight fight fight, get shot with arrows and get up no problem. Well, I got a problem with that. Believe me, I really liked Skyscraper, so I have no problem with the, "yeah right" scenes.
But get shot in the chest with an extra sharp arrow and you barely wince, and you make out with the girl and then you are good to go? Come on! Anyway, there was a lot of beautiful stuff going on, beauty shots, fancy stunt work and I was fine with the acting, but unfortunately there were enough inane scenes that several times I actually put my movie theater blanket over my head and scrolled through my phone because I lost interest in the blather.
Overall I am glad I saw it. I am glad I paid matinee price. I am glad I had a delicious sushi dinner beforehand.
