Review of Robin Hood (2010) by Darby R — 03 Sep 2011
Ridley Scott and Cate Blanchett made this movie watchable. Thats how I can summarize the whole movie. The movie starts fast and charming, gets duller by time and finishes at a low plateu. I know Ridley Scott is a great director, especially having enjoyed "Kingdom of Heaven", but sorry Mr. Scott this movie really lacked the soul of the original 1991 "Robin Hood:Prince of the Thieves" movie with Kevin Costner.
Russell Crowe plays a more "philosophical" version of Robin Hood, and the focus is on the character before he became the "prince of thieves", thus giving hints to viewers the background of the character. However, there were two things that pissed me off. First, King John character or more specifically the actor really irritated me as a character, and second I couldnt see much of the supporting cast of Hood including Little John and Lady Marlyn.
The "when lambs become lions" thing to me was so artificial that it just didnt fit with the Robin as we know from 1991. However, I do appreciate Scott as not "remaking" the 1991 movie, but instead making his own "prequel".
Anyway, to see lovely Blanchett as Lady Marlyn and solid directing by Scott saved the movie overall.. (5/10).
