Review of Rob Roy (1995) by Orukayu — 22 Jan 2023
Vengeance-themed historical film made in 1995. Just like in the movie "Braveheart", English overlords pay tribute to the people of the region on Scottish soil and torture them for entertainment. The Scotsman Rob Roy is both a former thief and the head of a clan. The right-hand man of the English lord to whom he is attached is a swordsman. Rob Roy asks this lord for a loan to trade. Lord confirms the debt. But the lord's accountant and his right-hand man set a trap and steal the £1,000 loaned out. Rob can't tell his troubles to the lord. Since it is upright, the gaps are stretched well.
The movie cannot make the audience as ambitious as "Braveheart". It is as if the characters and the actors do not sit together. The audience cannot engage with the movie. Back when Liam Neeson was young and big at the same time. But this role did not suit him. However, he played a legend in the movie "Les Miserables". Jessica Lange, on the other hand, with a perpetual meaningless smile on her face. Tim Roth seems to be in a politeness that doesn't fit the period at all. But he's so repulsive that he hates himself. Brian Cox, who I admire, is the first time in such a dirty role.
The soundtrack isn't bad.
Although the event is presented as a struggle for heroism and honor, Roy is actually the big loser. He causes the death of everyone around him with his headstrong and I know best demeanor. He is losing all his land. It leaves many women without husbands and children without fathers. A family remains. This is called the honor struggle. The man is wrong in every decision. Wouldn't the survivors spit in the face for their loss?
There is a lot of sex in the movie, but no nudity.
