Review of Road to Perdition (2002) by Remi L — 02 Jan 2011

Tom Hanks gets two thumbs way up for his role as this hit man on the run with his eldest son from the crime family who turned on him. You really feel for this guy who had no other family but the Irish mob and admire him for how quickly he adapts to a new and dangerous environment and how his first instinct is to prepare his sort-of estranged son for the trouble that lays ahead.

Jude Law also made for an interesting and quirky assassin. The violence was actually pretty low, which surprised me as this was a film about a hitman on the run. I also loved the references to the Italian mafia as this film takes place in the 30s.

Sam Mendes created a very subtle and enjoyable man-on-the-run film. Perhaps maybe so subtle that it lulled me. I'm used to films like this having me on the edge of my seat, wondering what'll happen next.

I was in a perpetual state of calm watching this movie. I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing. If you like heart-pumping action, I would say avoid this. But if you like a crime film with more drama, this might be for you.
