Review of Road to Perdition (2002) by Josh B — 19 Apr 2010
On paper Road To Perdition is an Oscar winning, brilliant cinema piece. Yet on the screen, it doesnt quite live up to the standard. A spectacular cast, headed by Tom Hanks, with the late Paul Newman in his last screen role, with Jude Law and Daniel Craig.
Director Sam Mendes behind the camera, and a solid plot revolving around father-son relationships. On the back of that, Road to Perdition should have been an outstanding film. Yet for some reason, it falls into the crowd.
Medicore is too harsh of a word, yet it seems to almost fit. In viewing the film I notice that all the right ingrediants are there, yet it wasnt mixed right. Something is missing from the picture. Whether it is Tom Hanks' solid, yet rigid potrayal, particularly beside Tyler Hoechlin (who himself is very good).
Paul Newman is very good and relatable, and Jude Law puts in an alright performance. The movie is worth watching, its enthralling and intense, yet it isnt stellar, and perhaps a little underachieving.
