Review of Road to Perdition (2002) by Andrew U — 17 Aug 2010
Hit man Tom Hanks FTW. His hard hitting portrayal of Michael Sullivan, an expert killer, is one for the record books. Beautifully shot and scored. The gun fight towards the end is one of the most striking I've seen in a movie.
Michael has a seemingly normal life, two boys and a loving wife, but his job requires him to deliver 'messages' to people for his boss, John Roony (Paul Newman, awesome) and sometimes those messages consist of bullets. When Michael's son, Michael Jr., witnesses Rooney's son Connor (Daniel Craig, showing why he got the Bond gig) execute a man, their entire family is put in danger. Connor goes to the Sullivan home to kill the boy, he believes he does so and kills the mother as well. Michael times 2 run for their lives, but not before the dad delivers a message of his own to Mr. Rooney. Now the race is on, as Sullivan angles for vengeance and keeping the only son he has left safe while people he used to call friends work tooth and nail to kill him, putting a hardened, determined hit man on their trail (Jude Law) who is cold as ice.
Road to Perdition is a true gem of a film. From the perfect capturing of the America in the 30s to the stellar work of the entire cast, from big names to cameos.
