Review of Risen (2016) by Arturo E — 10 Apr 2016
This movie could be called the Gospel according to Clavius. It left me struggling with questioning its implausibility even though I understand the use of a Roman officer to explain the inexplicable. Surely if Clavius existed as he did in the story, at least one of the writers of the Gospels among the 11 would have remembered and mentioned him.
That aside, the movie was pretty good with an otherwise accurate story line for the most part with gaps and unreported events, even the ancient lifestyle, filled in acceptably. The horror of crucifixion and the treatment of the deceased's remains were presented well without over dramatization. I also agree that the over all tone of the movie was lighter and more palatable than some faith based films that aim to overwhelm and inspire. I was left feeling kind of moved but empty knowing the outcome of the story. The Trbune's conversion was relatively subtle and believable ultimately based in reason and observation rather than faith alone.
Joseph Fiennes shows that he can turn in a performance almost equal to brother Ralph. The movie is well cast with a variety of believable and experience actors.
