Review of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) by Paul W — 07 Jun 2013
The movie is entertaining enough to stand on its own, but just barely. It's harder to justify it as a remake/reboot. Apart from showing off better monkey-related special effects, they haven't really improved on the original, and it's hard to say having Andy Serkis in a motion capture suit was worth making a whole movie.
The ape scenes are better than the human scenes. Not only do they have better special effects, but they have better characters and more interesting plot lines, too. It's easier to root for the apes at the end, since their backstories and acting didn't bore and annoy you earlier in the film.
A passable movie that could have been a lot more.
