Review of Rise of the Guardians (2012) by Tyler R — 14 Aug 2013
This could have been called The Avengers: Folk Tale Edition. That's not a knock against this filn in any way, it's actually a praise for it. Never before has any film (successfully) put together all the heroes of kid's dreams.
Rise of the Guardians tells the story of Jack Frost, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Sandman, and the Tooth Fairy as they battle Pitch Black. First of all, props for pulling it all together in a successful way.
This could have easily crumbled into a horrible mess, with a team up reminiscent of The Santa Clause 2 *Shudder*. Luckily, everyone involved is competent enough to make sure that doesn't happen. The voice acting, and this boasts an impressive cast, is pretty top notch.
Alec Baldwin as the Russian Santa is a show stealer and he gets the most laughs. Jude Law as Pitch Black proves that he should do more voice acting. The film is a kid's film, no doubt about it, but it is definitely darker in tone than most.
Caution to the little ones out there because some scenes may be a bit too intense for them. Overall, though, this was a smooth sailing holiday film that surprised me in a good way.
