Review of Rise of the Footsoldier (2007) by Rhys F — 11 Dec 2008
Watching this film is easy - evaluating it is a totally different story. Yes, the film's script is weak, the violence a bit much, and the acting dry. So the artistry is lacking. But if the film aims to reflect the football firms and their blokes accurately, considering how often they resort to violence and swearing, how much of their communication is handled through grunts and shrugs, well then - perhaps this movie should be considered as an amazing near-documentary? It does *not* work on me - there are better films that handle the shady world of security, much better films that deal with the drug underworld, and even something like 'Green Street Hooligans' handles the topic of football firms with more depth.
So, all in all, this was unimpressive. And if you rate this movie high because of its novelty in some sphere, you need to see more films - there is nothing in here that's new...
