Review of Ripley's Game (2002) by Jason Y — 04 Apr 2004
The character of Tom Ripley has been played many times over the years: Dennis Hopper, Alain Delon, and Matt Damon. Barry Pepper is signed on to play Ripley in the upcoming White on White, and John Malkovich played him here in Ripley's Game. I don't think it has to be stated that Damon was the best. For he may be the best American actor working today. Malkovich is Malkovich, and although the Ripley he plays may be more like Patricia Highsmith's novel Ripley, it isn't the intriguing and complex character Damon created with director Anthony Minghella in The Talented Mr. Ripley. "It was like watching Rushmore 2 and me wanting Max Fischer dead." Megan, the biggest Talented Mr. Ripley fan ever, wasn't too big on the new Ripley. My hatred isn't quite as adamant. It doesn't ruin The Talented Mr. Ripley like American Psycho 2 ruined its predecessor, but it isn't really worth seeing.
If you like Ripley's Game, you might also like...
