Review of Ripley's Game (2002) by Franz P — 30 Jul 2007
The only reason why I wanted to watch this film was because it is the sequel to one of my favourite films of all time, "The Talented Mr. Ripley." Instead of Matt Damon playing the charismatic Tom Ripley, John Malkovich takes on the challenge in this semi-engaging but hopelessly flawed thriller.
Although it had its moments, such as the metro-multiple-murder scene, as a whole, it lacked what made "The Talented Mr. Ripley" so haunting. John Malkovich's Ripley is too cold-hearted which made it that more difficult for the audiences to relate their own vanities and insecurities.
It goes to show that without balance, an extremely fascinating character can get reduced to a babbling, typical criminal.
