Review of R.I.P.D. (2013) by Ashish T — 09 Dec 2013
Yeah, so-so. It's basically MIB meets The Frighteners, with Ryan Reynolds looking mostly sad and distraught, Jeff Bridges looking bright-eyed, bushy-faced and completely unintelligible, and Kevin Bacon playing Sebastian Shaw all over again. The movie's surprisingly slow and turgid despite a lot of action sequences - and the action sequences feel kinda slow compared to the sheer goofy kinetic energy that an MIB had, while the creepy factor has a lot to learn from the original ghost movie - Ghostbusters - which was awesomely yell-in-fright scary.
Frankly, the only bits I liked had Mary-Louise Parker; she's a whole new level of deadpan funny.
