Review of R.I.P.D. (2013) by Flipje — 25 May 2021
R.I.P.D. recipe in a nutshell: take the premise of Men in Black, except now its about dead people and add some bland gags, late 2000s video game graphics CGI (Left 4 Dead, for example). Next, mix in Ryan Reynolds as Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges doing his absolute most tired and annoying version of his True Grit performance with a healthy dash of Kevin Bacon's Ray Liota impression of a dirty copy and bingo-bango, a few more badly landed gags, a paint-by-numbers love interest and Marie Louise Parker being cute in 1970s fashion, and you have this film concocted.
This film is pure pay cheque for the cast. Watching it, you can feel it must have been a gruel to make, that lost bets were being called in. I wanted to enjoy how bad this all was. I chuckled at myself for getting to the end.
It feels like a 2am movie with the last bottle of beer in your fridge.
