Review of R.I.P.D. (2013) by Mike S — 20 Jan 2014
No where near as terrible as reported, so in many ways, I was pleasantly surprised. Whilst the film has a number of unique elements to it, all the good elements are pretty much lifted from Men In Black or Ghostbusters.
Jeff Bridges and to a lesser extent Parker bring energy and sass to the movie, whilst Reynolds is fine in the role as Nick. However, Bacon seems to be just cruising and doesn't provide a strong enough villain.
The effects aren't as good as you'd expect for a $130 million budget, and the film constantly lets itself down with weak scenes, terrible dialogue and very weak jokes.
Not quite the train wreak that many have suggested, but leave your expectations at the door and there's enough to enjoy in only 87 minutes of actual film.
