Review of Rio Bravo (1959) by Antti K — 17 Feb 2009
Only Howard Hawks could make such an epic-feeling and gorgeously sprawling western within the confines of such a small town. It's a film made in a transition period, but it seamlessly intertwines classic hollywood motifs with revisionist ones and is confident about it the entire time.
Hawks' usual ensemble of heroes is present, and they are more personable and witty perhaps than ever before (or after), and the role of the Hawksian woman is filled out (and I mean FILLED OUT! Ow!) by the gorgeous and talented Angie Dickinson.
Wayne is both tough and sweet, Martin proves he can act as well as he can sing, Brennan is hysterical as usual and Nelson holds his own.
