Review of Rio 2 (2014) by Sophie L — 19 Jul 2014
I have seen the first Rio, but I could remember barely anything about it. I do remember it being fairly ordinary. So I was a bit surprised to see that Blue Sky Studios was bringing out a sequel, rather then a new Ice Age film or brand new franchise.
The best thing about Rio 2 is the animation. The birds look and act wonderfully. The setting is also gorgeous, the jungles of the amazon is where the film is set.
Other then that, there isn't much else that is brought to the table. Our main character, Blue is a little bitch and isn't very likeable because of it. You'll find yourself teaming with the rest of his family most of the time, as they want to have a little fun and he is just being a prude. The rest of the characters are all just based on tired cliches, that were maybe funny when the first film came out but are now old. The villain Nigel, an old cockatoo, has some funny moments, especially when he sings his own version of 'I will survive', but is generally a bit stagnant.
Rio 2 will probably appease the littlies, but the parents will leave feeling disappointed, especially when we have been spoiled with so many animations that work both ways lately. 'How To Train A Dragon 2' this ain't. The weakest kids movie of the holiday period. Probably wait for DVD if you haven't seen it already and still want to.
2/5.
'I will survive!' - Nigel.
