As is the trend of late, a sequel that completely diminishes the quality of it's predecessors. Rings is not all bad, but you absolutely have to look at it apart from the Ring franchise and think of it as its own, non-Rings entity.

As part of the (American) trilogy, it's terrible; it takes away all that the incredible first installment set in motion, and is lesser than even the just decent second installment; it completely changes the story (to something too technologically updated [spoiler-ish], The Samara Project? Really? That's where you take it?).

Now, besides this update, you actually do get a good enough story. Similar in following the clues to decipher Samara's code as in the first Ring films, you get some additional tidbits into the story (Samara's family and townfolk).

These were actually good scenes that THANKFULLY stray from the [spoiler again] Samara Project hogwash. Oh, and no more than three minutes into the movie, you (or at least I did) see editing discrepancies.

The man did not tell the girl that his phone call simply uttered "7 Days." He said something to the effect that his phone call said he will die in 7 days. And when she tells her friend about the strange man, she says that he said his phone caller said, in Ring-fashion and Samara voice, "7 Days.

" Sorry, nitpicking, but it was already off to a bad start. Kudos, though, to Vincent D' Onofrio, who turns in a terrific performance.
