Review of Rings (2017) by Joseph V — 14 Jun 2017
Rings is a perfectly disposable, functionable horror movie that will be scary enough I'm sure to people who've never heard of The Ring Series or gotten any of the references. The acting was hit or miss - the main actor (Matilda Lutz) was not great, all of her dialogue felt very wooden.
Her boyfriend played by Alex Roe was okay, although that has to be one of the dumbest characters in recent horror cinema given that it's his actions (or lack thereof) that allow certain things to happen plot-wise.
I thought Johnny Galecki (Big Bang Theory) did well enough, although his character wasn't stunningly written, but for me it was Vicent D'Onofrio (Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Men in Black) who came in and rescued this movie from being a total wash.
He is suitable for this kind of film and adds a much-needed layer to the middle and final portions. Even so, the lack of scares and chills, a mixed bag of performances with more misses than bulls-eyes and a frustrating plot make Rings a Dieharders Only experience.
This is for diehard horror movie/Ring series fans and also for fans of Vincent D'Onofrio...so I'd probably watch this again? Maybe? Please don't believe me?
