Review of Rings (2017) by Reel Life R — 12 Feb 2017
The tag line is "First you watch it. Then you die"....That's not too far off. The movie stumbles right out of the gate with a wholly unnecessary scene, which is immediately followed by a flash-forward of 2 years.
We're then introduced to the main characters, but soon thereafter we flash-forward once more, but this time for 6 weeks. Why the movie couldn't have just opened at this point is beyond me, as the preceeding scenes aren't referenced, save it be for literally one line of dialogue.
The director showed zero confidence in either the audience or his own skill for being able to portray subtle plot points. Key scenes aren't just shown, they are explained by the characters while they happen.
The exposition was off the charts. Trapped inside this mess was Johnny Galecki who plays a young college professor. He actually brought weight and substance to his character. I found myself far more engaged during his scenes, but he's really just a side character.
They dragged my man Vincent D'Onofrio into it as well. He did fine with his role, but the character felt like a last minute addition to the script to try to duct tape this plot together. The movie had an original release date of this past October, so I knew if the studio pushed a horror movie away from Halloween and stuffed it in early February it would be a rough ride.
What it ended up being was a great idea for The Ring 4; rather than have the characters watch a creepy death movie, have them watch Rings.
