Review of Ride with the Devil (1999) by Jonathan M — 27 Jul 2010
Ang Lee's civil war piece starring Tobey Maguire among a talented cast nonetheless tends to meander, largely for not having a strong central character or motive. Jeffrey Wright's character seems notable in the way he brings race into the Civil War in a unique way (he's fighting for the South), but he's too often in the sidekick role.
The action scenes don't always work, especially when the bright costumes give it a Robin Hood feel that undercuts the intention.
