Review of Ricki and the Flash (2015) by Barbara C — 07 Aug 2015
Rick Springfield rocks and I liked every bit of his performance. For the seven (?) full length songs in the film, I was glad for his chops and those of the band. For the number of songs, you'd think they'd have figured out they either needed to dub Meryl's voice or at least sufficiently auto-tune her.
It was fingernails on the chalkboard for me. When they get to the Springsteen song I was ready to leave but someone else drove. Why harp on the music? It's a musical. As for the non-musical part of the movie, I enjoyed it.
The script was sound. The characters were solidly written and performed. So, for Diablo Cody, well done. For all the acting, well done. For whomever made the decision to include that many songs, what were you thinking? For the record, I play music and sing and I'm over 50.
My husband enjoyed all the music in the movie and said, "I thought she was good." This calls into serious question every word he's ever said to me about my music. Oy.
