Review of Rhinestone (1984) by Mar T — 08 Jun 2008
God, this movie was bad....and not even in a "so bad, it's sort of amusing" kind of way. Dolly Parton's career was at its commercial peak in 1984, so it's surprising that *this* is the best movie Hollywood could offer her (either that, or she actually *chose* this wretched little project over other films, indicating that her judgment was seriously off at the time).
The plot and characterization were almost nonexistent (Dolly played a country singer and Stallone played an illiterate buffoon incapable of stringing together a coherent sentence -- in other words, they more or less played themselves), and the dialogue made the average 'Hee-Haw' skit look like high art.
About the only thing this movie has going for it are a half dozen pretty engaging country songs, written and performed by Dolly Parton (and even there, none of them are exactly 'Jolene'), and those songs could be listened to via the soundtrack album, available on eBay for roughly the same price as it would cost to rent this mind-numbingly bad movie.
