There's some really dark material here, and I'm not familiar enough with the source material to know how much is from Frank Baum's source material. The Gale's are homeless. Uncle Henry is near catatonic from depression.

And 8 year-old Dorthy is institutionalized and getting shock treatment! What could have made for a strong horror film for kids is marred by shockingly poor dialog. Rule number one, never talk down to your audience.
