This is a sentimental favorite of mine. I grew up reading L. Frank Baum's Oz series, and, while I love the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book, I've always felt that Return to Oz was closer to its literary roots--indeed, I was very pleased to watch the end credits and find that Oz illustrator John R. Neill received credit as his aesthetic sensibilities play a large part in this film. This is a good thing because, visually, this is a beautiful film with its apocalyptic art nouveau styling. Then there's the work of Will Vinton (same artist who did the California Raisins ads in the 80s) and his amazing clay-animated special effects which garnered him an Oscar nomination.

To be as objective as I can, the first two thirds of the film make for a solid fantasy film and excellent viewing; however, the final third unravels here and there, and little plot holes unfortunately emerge. Still, if you are a fan of Baum's work, of 80s fantasy film, or of films that the Walt Disney corporation would rather you forget, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Better yet, wait until dark and watch it with the lights turned off. There are a few scenes in here that retain their shock value very well after almost 20 years of watching this film. Enjoy!
