Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Rebecca H — 13 Nov 2008
A dark and memorable children's film.
I loved the book Ozma Of Oz as a child, so the liberties taken here, and mashing in of The Marvellous Land Of Oz, annoy me slightly, but if you haven't read the books then it works very well. It may also upset young children or fans of the first film, as Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) is now a mental patient and Oz is destroyed. Also, Ozma (Emma Ridley) is mystifyingly scary.
I do recommend it for those who enjoy dark and stylistic films, and it is a relief after the gaudy original.
