Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Tristan G — 01 Aug 2009
A film from Disney that is worth watching! Return To Oz returns the Wizard of Oz franchise to its roots, the beloved Frank L. Baum books that are American Classics. This is a much darker film that the MGM Technicolor musical farce we all know, because this movie more closely follows Baum's books Dorothy in Oz and Ozma in Oz.
The books are not nearly as cheery. Fairuza Balk's first film, the movie has darkness, comedy, spooky wonder, and a very tangible twist on the Oz world if all you know is the MGM version. After watching this, or perhaps beforehand, I plead that you read the books.
Then go back and watch the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and ask yourself if that was the author's intent.
