Review of Return to Oz (1985) by David P — 13 Dec 2010
Will (California Raisins) Vinton's claymation effects look better than animatronics and CGI. The clay effects simulated weight much more effectively than CGI. Too many times CGI characters look like they have no weight.
The Gnome King is such a pimp. I love how this isn't a musical and there are no distracting casting choices, no Billy Crystal or Robin Williams, thank god. This is one of very few kid movies that isn't afraid to be scary and intense, much like The Brave Little Toaster.
You never feel that Dorothy is safe till the end, and that's a good thing. I wish Tim Burton would make kid movies like this one and integrate stop motion into live action. Alice in Wonderland looked like a video game.
