This should be seen as the anti-Wizard of Oz. All those who watched this expecting soem cutesy rehash of the 1939 film were in for a shock. And that's probably why it bombed in the box office. But this is actually a pretty awesome film.
Yes, it is darker and creepier than the original, but it is also more faithful to the books, which themselves were quite macabre, and it has a lot of imagination. Plus, the Wheeler's have to be some of the coolest henchmen ever!
