Review of Return to Oz (1985) by Lilian W — 26 Feb 2013
Just saw this again for the first time in decades, and am so pleased to say it holds up beautifully. Here's an Oz film unafraid to take risks, and the results are richly satisfying. Faithful to the spirit (and to many specific elements of) the two best books in Baum's Oz canon, with fantastically realized creatures, a smart script, and a beautiful score, there's no doubt this film has its dark and frightening moments, but the filmmakers' sense of wonder and love of Oz shines through.
Certainly deserving of a wider audience than it currently commands.
