Review of Return of the Jedi (1983) by Jim C — 06 Jan 2016
"Return of the Jedi" is the first film I ever saw in the theaters. It is a modest follow-up to the nearly perfect "Empire Strikes Back" that does an adequate job of tying up loose ends and providing audiences with the swashbuckling light-saber action and massive space battles they expect.
Yet, even seeing this film as a child, I was perplexed by the addition of child-oriented humor. Even at five years old I remember thinking, "a planet full of sentient teddy bears... uh, really?" Most fault the prequels for turning Star Wars into kids' movies, but the trend actually began in 1983.
Still, there is enough of the first two films in Return of the Jedi to make it a satisfactory conclusion to an epic film trilogy.
